FROM A MOVEMENT IN INDIA TO A GLOBAL QUESTION
India’s youth-led Cockroach Janta Party turned a demeaning label into a symbol of dignity and collective voice, bringing unemployment, exam integrity, educational opportunity, and institutional accountability into public view.
Our discussions will begin with that case, then pivot outward: When conflict erupts over education, which values, histories, identities, and power arrangements are colliding – and whose vision of the future prevails – and can we get there together?
DISCUSSION PROPOSITION
Education disputes framed as arguments about policy, standards, performance, or behavior are often values clashes. Such values-based commitments are internalized through life events and reinforced by inter-generational processes involving identity, culture, social position, and power.
As international educators, scholars, students, administrators, and policy-makers, how should we engage these dynamics to increase understanding, collaboration, and problem-solving by all key stakeholders?
WHAT WE WILL EXPLORE
- POWER AND PURPOSE: Who decides what education is for, and whose needs take priority?
- GENERATIONS AND WORLDVIEWS: How do different generational identities shape competing views of authority, opportunity, success, and responsibility?
- FROM CONFLICT TO CHANGE: How can values-informed practice turn clashes into constructive dialogue, action, and responsive educational systems?
FORMAT
A panel of experts in values and Values-based Education will explore these questions with at least 30 minutes reserved for audience questions and answers. Full speaker details to follow shortly.
This is the first of two 90-minute sessions with different speakers addressing the same question organised by the Global Alliance for Values-based Education (GAVE). The sessions are on 14th October at 08.00 and 17.00 BST.
OCTOBER 2026 TO NOVEMBER 2027: These roundtables launch a year-long conversation connecting GAVE’s Model-Method Project, a special issue of Education Sciences on Values-based Education, and a Values-based Conference at Parul University in November 2027 (see https://gave.global/ for more information).
